Ideas and Plans

If you're a fan of television decorating shows and interior design magazines, you've probably had at least one moment of wide eyed wonder at the amazing creations the professional designer was able to come up with for the featured Brampton real estate. You may think that you lack a certain something that prevents you from achieving your dream of designing a decorating scheme based on your own ideas, but you're wrong. Even the smallest spark of creativity can be kindled with a little help from our step by step guide to decorating ideas and plans.

Step 1: Learn the Ropes

You've already taken a step in the right direction if you've been watching decorating shows or reading decorating magazines. However, if you're going to go ahead with your own plans you need to really pay attention to what the decorator is doing. If she chooses a floor lamp, ask yourself why did she choose THIS floor lamp for THIS London, Ontario townhouse? The reasoning you see behind their actions can be translated into your own brain and used to help you complete your own project.

Step 2: Get Inspired

This is the most difficult step for many people. However, inspiration is all around us. You can be inspired by a color or picture in a book. You can be walking down the street and see a particular style of tree growing from the rooftop garden on an L Tower that blossoms in your mind to a whole themed room. If you're having trouble getting inspired, we recommend talking a walk (no iPods!) and really looking around at what you see. Alternatively, browse decorating magazines for interesting ideas to use as a springboard.

Step 3: Incorporate Elements

Now that you have a theme in mind, you're going to have to try and adapt it to fit the home it was meant for. Rather than creating a general design scheme that can be rubber stamped onto a whole row of Milton, Ontario houses, try to use each home's original features as part of the design. Take a walk through the house and think about the protruding old fashioned radiators and the narrow basement stairs and see what they can become in your imagination, bringing in and taking out furniture and decorative items mentally until you find the right fit.

Step 4: Plan and Budget

Once things are straight in your head you need to commit them to paper. Accurate measurements of your Yorkville, Toronto real estate and chosen items will insure success and let you enlist helpers without you personally having to direct their every move. You'll also need to trot out your rudimentary math skills and plan your budget to see if the scheme is affordable.
