Furniture & Textiles

Just like deciding what pair of womens pants you should wear that match the new pair of heels you just bought, designing the interior of rooms usually relies on the furniture and textiles that you pick out. You can't go about designing any single bathroom or bedroom without knowing what furniture you want and where to put it. Textiles and furniture are primary elements of interior design and they have a very close relationship. Furniture is seen as being a form of expression of the person who lives in the home but the textiles used gives the designer their own imprint.

Every room that is being designed has it's own unique style that gives off the taste of the person who chooses it. Usually when you think of furniture, you probably just think to yourself that it consists of basic items found in any downtown Toronto condominiums such as leather couches or recliners in living rooms, beds and cabinets in the bedroom or kitchen tables and chairs in the dining room. But that's not the case. You need to think outside the box and realize that even if you can't sit on it like a couch, there are items that are being thought of as furniture that you might not think of in the traditional sense.

One such non-traditional furniture that is gaining in popularity are vinyl wall sayings or pictures. The most popular form of these are called Fatheads. You may have even seen the commercials on television for these larger than life wall decals that range from army tanks to famous hockey players like Sidney Crosby. It used to be the norm that people would put so much stock into what posters would adorn the walls and where they would go. But Fatheads have put a dent in that market because you don't need to worry about frames or nails and are very easy to put up and take down. So, when you're thinking of new innovations when designing that bedroom, don't forget to pick out what you want to put up on those walls.

Textiles are flexible materials that consist of networks of artificial or natural fibers, which are also commonly referred to as yarn or thread. Textiles are made by knitting and weaving fibers together to make felt. This felt can make up many of the pieces of furniture you find yourself putting in the living room designs of those Queen West homes blueprints you're working on. You might also hear the words fabric or cloth when dealing with textiles but you need to know that textile refers mostly to material made from interlacing fibers while fabric refers to the materials made through knitting or weaving. And cloth is a piece of fabric used for such things as bedspreads.

When you're doing some interior design and picking out which colour carpet the living room should be that will help accentuate the drapes that you picked out for the side windows, don't forget the important part that textiles have played in the those items you have chosen. The relationship between textiles and furniture helps any designer or architect come up with the best looking arrangements they can for that Halton Hills real estate that you may be looking at purchasing. Even though you might not put too much stock into the kitchen counter tops or bed sheets you're picking out, just remember that without textiles, designing rooms might be a lot less fun. Don't you want to have as much fun as the ladies on Designing Women?
