Architecture

Taken from the Greek word architektonike, architecture refers to the process of constructing and designing buildings or structures by a computer or a human being to provide shelter for others. In a more detailed way, architecture can also be seen as being the design of the total built environment of how buildings interact with their surroundings and also deals with such things as construction planning and furniture layout. Another level to architecture is known as documentation, which is based on drawings or what is also known as blueprints. When describing documentation architecture, you focus more on the scientific research and experimental development of the structure and behaviour of any building or system that's being constructed. Architects need to concern themselves with providing the best shelter and spatial needs of the people who will be either living in, working in, going to school in, etc. of whatever building they are constructing and there are a variety of elements that go into doing such a job.

Some of the aspects that architects deal with in the planning stage are: texture, volume, mass, materials, form, space, shadow and light. They must also deal with pragmatic elements such as technology, cost and construction limitations in order to achieve their desired goal. Every architect wants to construct something that is not only practical, economical, and functional but also wants something that can show off their artistic and aesthetic skills.

Apart from the design process of architecture, which we have described for you throughout this article, architecture can also be experienced through the senses. This leads to subsections of architecture that are divided into visual, tactile, aural and olfactory architecture. As society progresses and technology expands and develops faster than we can keep up with it, people want their buildings to adjust to these changes and architects not only use the five senses when building but architecture starts to become more multi-disciplinary which leads to bigger and better buildings being built but it also means that architects need the input of others. This leads to architecture being more team-orientated but don't think that architects aren't as important. Even though architecture requires specific specialist professionals such as those in charge of designing the shingle patterns or picking out the right industrial strainers for each floor, the architect is still seen as the team leader.
